Who we are
BotW Map (botwmap.com) is a free, independent fan-made interactive map for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean the people who run botwmap.com. You can reach us at contact@botwmap.com.
Summary
- You do not need an account, and we never ask for your name, email address or password to use the map.
- Found markers, chosen layers, your own pins and the theme are stored in your browser and are not sent to us.
- Our hosting provider processes basic connection data, such as your IP address, to deliver and protect the site.
- We use Google AdSense to show ads. Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads, including personalized ads where the law allows it. You can turn personalized ads off at any time.
- We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are used, so we know what to improve. It does not tell us who you are.
- We do not sell your personal information.
Information stored in your browser
The map remembers your progress with your browser's local storage, a small storage area on your own device. We use it for:
- the markers you mark as found, such as shrines, Korok seeds and chests;
- which map layers are switched on, and whether found markers and place names are hidden;
- the pins and notes you add yourself;
- your choice of light or dark theme.
This data stays on your device. It is never uploaded to our servers, and we cannot see, recover or delete it for you. You can remove it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings. The backup code in the map panel is created in your browser too, and only goes where you choose to paste it.
Information processed when you visit
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives technical data when your browser requests a page: your IP address, the page address, the date and time, your browser type and operating system, and the referring page. Cloudflare uses this data to deliver the site, to keep it fast and to protect it against attacks and abuse. We do not use it to identify you. Cloudflare's handling of this data is described in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
The map fetches its tiles and marker data only from botwmap.com. The fonts are served from our own domain as well, so no font service learns about your visit.
Advertising and cookies
We use Google AdSense, an advertising service from Google LLC, to show ads that help pay for hosting and keep the map free. When ads are shown:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info or, in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will be based on general factors such as the page you are viewing rather than on your interests.
Google may also use cookies, web beacons and similar technologies to measure ad performance and to prevent fraud. You can learn more in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and in the Google Privacy Policy.
Before cookies are used for personalized ads, visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google's consent message, which meets the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. You can change your choice at any time from the privacy link that message adds to the page. Without your consent, only non-personalized or limited ads are shown.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking cookies does not stop the map from working, though it may change the ads you see.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4, a service from Google LLC, to understand how the site is used: which pages are visited, how visitors arrive (for example from a search engine), and which features of the map are popular. This helps us decide what to fix and what to build next.
Google Analytics uses cookies (such as _ga) and collects information like the pages you view, the time spent on them, your browser and device type, your approximate location at city or country level, and the referring page. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We see this information only as statistics; it is not used to identify you, and we do not combine it with other data about you. Analytics data is kept for up to 14 months.
In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, analytics and advertising cookies stay off until you agree in the consent message. Until then Google receives only cookieless signals without identifiers. Anywhere in the world, you can block Google Analytics with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser. Learn more in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
When you email us
If you write to us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message. We use it only to answer you and to fix the problem you reported. We do not add you to any mailing list. We keep messages for as long as we need them to handle your request and then delete them, and we will delete your message sooner if you ask.
Legal bases (EEA and UK visitors)
Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on these legal bases:
- Legitimate interests for delivering and securing the site and for answering your emails;
- Consent for analytics cookies and cookies used for personalized advertising, which you can withdraw at any time.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data about you, to object to or restrict how it is used, to data portability, and to withdraw consent. Residents of California and other US states may have the right to know what personal information is collected, to request its deletion, and to opt out of its "sale" or "sharing" for targeted advertising. We do not sell personal information. To opt out of ad personalization, use the controls described in the advertising section above.
Because we do not keep accounts or store your progress, we hold very little data that could identify you. To make a request, email contact@botwmap.com. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children's privacy
BotW Map is a general audience site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data retention and security
The site is served only over HTTPS. Data in your browser stays until you clear it. Connection logs are kept by Cloudflare for a limited time according to its own policies. Emails are kept only as long as described above.
International visitors
Our hosting and advertising providers operate worldwide, so your data may be processed outside your country. These providers use legal safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, for transfers out of the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom.
Links to other websites
This site links to other websites, such as Zelda Wiki and the ZeldaMods community projects that our data comes from. Their privacy practices are their own, and we encourage you to read their policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the site or the law changes. The date at the top of this page shows the latest version. If a change affects how your data is used in a significant way, we will point it out on the site.
Contact
Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to contact@botwmap.com. See the Contact page for other ways we can help.
